It’s all about Janet!

Here’s the funny thing about our latest short film, Agent Janet.

I didn’t write it ABOUT Janet, or even for someone to play Janet.

I wrote a story about a spy and an ex-boyfriend. It was a parody of a made for streaming movie where a spy recruited her blue collar ex for a mission, despite the act he’s completely and utterly unqualified, and he just goes out on the mission. No paperwork. No orientation.

When I wrote the script, I was thinking about the spy and her boyfriend. This was their story, their movie. And yes, I had actors in mind for both roles – neither of whom ended up in the final picture.

It wasn’t until I was editing that I realized, wait, this isn’t about them. It’s about Janet. It’s about one woman’s ruthless efficiency and her efforts to make sure every I is dotted and every T crossed. She has a thankless job. Everyone hates her. But there’s no way anyone’s going out into the field until every piece of paper required by law is signed and filed!

Christina Cannon’s portrayal certainly played a part in that, as well as her appearance. I originally envisioned Janet in serious, business casual attire with glasses and a bun. When Christina dyed her hair the week before filming, we leaned into it. Let’s show the tattoos. Let’s go more with the world of John Wick than Initech.

It worked. And so does Christina’s portrayal. The condescension. The utter disgust and disdain for the spies she oversees.

“My pen!!!” That was all Christina.

I’m thrilled at the response it’s had online so far, much bigger than our typical video releases. We just might have to make some more.

And yes, Janet will appear in other Dead Park projects. There are two sequels in the works to Girl Most Likely to Kill You, and she’s already been written into one.

We made a spy movie!

Dead Park is a horror anthology, a collection of six books (and counting) filled with monsters, gore, and humor.

So why did we just make a spy movie?

As Bluto said when he gave Larry the nickname Pinto, “WHY NOT???”

Stop in my underground lair, where much of the writing happens, and you’ll get it. There are shelves full of wrestling books and videos (because I also write about wrestling), shelves full of Star Wars toys (my oldest obsession), and shelves full of spy books and movies.

Real spy stories. Fictional spies. Lots of Ian Fleming/James Bond but also Flint, Matt Helm, Maxwell Smart, Steed and Peele.

I even have a spy novel, Girl Most Likely to Kill You. And I’m working on two sequels. One of which connects Dead Park to my spy saga.

Because again… WHY NOT?”

Agent Janet was inspired by a movie on streaming. A secret agent recruits her blue collar ex-boyfriend to help her save the world. He gets a little training, some gadgets, and he’s off. No training, no orientation, and no…

Well, I won’t spoil the movie. You really need to watch it. So click play and enjoy.

Thanks to Christina Cannon, Heather Wilson, Serena Fister-Mesch, and especially Jason Crowe, who I finally got to collaborate with on this short!
